His excellent crew includes Dave Philipson (bansuri), Ellen Burr (flute), Bruce Fowler (trombone), Mark Weaver (tuba), Bill Casale (bass), and Brad Dutz (mallet percussion), and his compositional/improvisational approach melds the shifting harmonic clouds of early 20th-century Russians with an attention to unusual timbral combinations reminiscent of Gil Evans. "Much border-pushing improvisational music sounds like work; drummer Harris Eisenstadt makes it fun. He takes his fun seriously, though, or he wouldn't have bothered getting his masters from CalArts and studying with heavyweights like Barry Altschul, John Bergamo, and Wadada Leo Smith.
